Key Facts About Cockatoo Birds
Cockatoos belong to the cacatuidae family also known as Psittaciformes.
There are more than twenty species of the cockatoo birds and cockatiels is
known to be the smallest of them. Cockatoos can be differentiated from their
cousins in many ways like the crest adorning their heads. What is really
interesting is the fact that these birds do not have green feathers, instead
they boast bright white and creamy pink hues with sharp spots of red and yellow.
There are also some species that appear black and grey like galah
cockatoo. Generally, cockatoos are larger than parrots and average about 20
inches (50.8cm) in length. Of the more than 20 species of cockatoos that exist
in the world, half of them is listed as endangered.
This bird species is a native to Australia, as well as
Indonesia and the Philippines thou, they are kept as pets in many parts of the
world, and they can be found non-natively in some areas due to release of owned
animals. In China, Hong Kong has a rather large population of certain cockatoo
species who otherwise would likely not live there if not for the fact that they
have been abandoned by their human companions.
When it comes to pet birds, cockatoos are one of the most
widely owned, the Sulphur crested cockatoo is known to be the most commonly kept
cockatoo bird but when it comes to wild cockatoos, the Galah cockatoo is likely
the most widespread.
The cockatoo birds turn to live in flocks of which there can
be more than 80 members. These birds are social creatures and spend a lot of
time together either grooming or watching out for one another while foraging.
For the most part, cockatoos are monogamous sticking with the same mate for life
or at least as long as they are both alive.
Breeding
They nest in hallow trees and typically nest lay two white
eggs. They are not capable of making these nest themselves so they can be a source
of competition. The eggs are usually incubated by both parents although not all
bird species do these, the incubation period can last for about 25 days. The
baby cockatoo will stay in the nest anywhere from just over a month to nearly
four months depending on the species (smaller species usually take less time).
Cockatoos don’t reach maturity for a few years but once they do, they will
begin the process all over again.
Life span
In the wild, most cockatoos can live for about 50 years of
cage while captive kept birds turn to live for only 30 years due to poor
husbandry and lack of socialization. Cockatoos seem to live in open environments
including open grasslands, forest and even cities like we previously mentioned
above though it should be noted that no one species inhabit in a variety of
habitats. So basically, while the group as a whole like to hang out just about
anywhere, most species have their favorite spots on roots.
Food
Cockatoos enjoy eating seeds, fruits, vegetables and even
insects with each specie having distinct preferences. Cockatoos are considered
by some to be a symbol of change as well as community. We were lucky to meet a
cockatoo named Finn who loves to give hand shakes and also roar like a lion.
Cockatoos don’t have the best range of vocabulary when compared with other bird
species but they can still learn from 1 t0 40 words
