Description
The macaw parrot is a beautiful long tailed and colorful parrot of the Psittacidae genus. This parrot specie is a native to Central America and North America and can be found in rainforest areas as well as woodland areas too. This mixed colorful bird makes it difficult to not notice their presence as their stunning colors will catch your attention even from a far distance, although its beak can be very scary a well trained and socialized macaw parrot will bond with its owner and will want to play and be with them always when she develops a sense of trust in the owner.
There exist 17 different types of macaw species namely the Blue and Gold macaw parrot, Greenwing macaw, Hahn's macaw, Hyacinth macaw, Hybrid macaw, Illiger's macaw, Military macaw, Scarlet macaw, Severe macaw, Yellow collared macaw, Spix macaw, Great green macaw, Red and green macaw, Red fronted macaw, Leah's macaw, Blue throated macaw etc, with each parrot having its own distinct personality.
The macaw parrot is the biggest of all the other parrot species with the Hyacinth parrot being the longest with about 38 inches in length.
Macaw Parrot Personality
If you own a macaw parrot, then you know this gentle giant birds are not only big in size but also in loving and are very sensitive in nature. The macaw parrot demands a lot of attention and care, and will want to play most of the time with their toys (wood toys), these toys enables them to exercise their strong beaks as they bite and play with them. Most often, people want to know if the macaw parrot can be silent or if it is a quiet parrot and the simple answer to that question is "no". Parrots generally are very loud and noisy so before you adopt a macaw parrot you should be fully prepared and if you live in an apartment with close neighbors then owning a macaw parrot can be very challenging for you. The macaw parrot is a very intelligent bird and can mimic human speeches, whistling and other sounds that they find pleasant to them, this parrot specie will mate with its owner for live and will develop a strong relationship in such a way that staying away for a very long time without playing with a macaw might cause some bad habits like feather plucking, loud noises etc. Watch video below for more information
Feeding and Care
As I earlier mentioned above, the macaw parrot is a huge bird and owning and caring for them will require a lot of commitment from the parrot owner. Macaw parrots need to participate in mental stimulation games and also a minimum of 2 hours of supervised time outside of the cage so that they can play and exercise their wings. It is advisable to also provide this bird with regular shower to keep it clean to avoid health infections. Macaw parrots feed on seeds, nuts, fresh fruits and vegetables, in captivity they feed on pellets to maintain a balance diet.
Life Span
In the wild, macaw parrots can live for more than 40 years as they can protect and take care of their selves but in captivity this amazing creatures can live for at most 25 years since most people don't really know how to handle this parrot. Since they also live for a very long time some families turn to abandon they parrot or die before them living them behind with no one to care for them.
